Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

The SDUCPTA DEI Committee: A connector of people and a conduit of ideas. The DEI Committee aims to connect PTA and non-PTA members across the San Diego Unified School District to foster conversations about equity in education and how to implement the PTA’s mission to advocate for all children and youth. If you are interested to get involved, have specific questions and suggestion, or want to get in touch with other PTAs doing similar work, please contact SDUCPTA DEI

We are actively looking for more Committee members!

The National PTA has a wide variety of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion resources. You can find handbooks, tip sheets, glossaries, discussion guides, and other written materials on their website here https://www.pta.org/home/run-your-pta/Diversity-Equity-Inclusion. Check out their podcast “Notes from the Backpack” and the informative 10 Minutes to PTA the Transformative Way videos.

The California State PTA website offers additional learning tools for equity in education. https://capta.org/focus-areas/dei/ If you are looking for PTA positions on specific topics and what legislation CAPTA is supporting, also check out their advocacy page https://capta.org/focus-areas/advocacy/

The Long Beach Council of PTAs has an interesting DEI Handbook for PTAs that might give you some ideas.

San Diego Unified’s Equity & Belonging website has a new resources page for students, staff, and families https://www.sdusdequity.com/protecting-students

Equity Learning Sessions

Equity Learning Sessions are interactive discussions that feature one or more speakers on a specific topic. If you have an idea for a topic or speaker, please get in touch with us SDUCPTA DEI!

1. Equity Learning Session #1 – Equity &  Belonging in San Diego Unified School District: Review the slides from our first Equity Learning Session with Ebonee Weathers (she/her) from the District’s Equity & Belonging Office. Learn about the different teams at the District, their priorities, why and how they work on these priorities, and how PTAs can partner with them. Take note of the many links for additional resources included throughout the slides. https://www.canva.com/design/DAGWN3siRVk/g15jULezM_qjJzh3IgTS-A/view?#1

2. Equity Learning Session #2 – SDUSD Restorative Discipline Policy:

In 2020, San Diego Unified School District adopted a Restorative Discipline Policy and charged all schools to adjust their school discipline plans accordingly. Review the slides to learn about the origins of restorative discipline; how the new policy changes conflict resolution for students, teachers, and administrators; and what parents and caregivers need to know about implementation.
