Navigating social media can be daunting, especially if it is your first time posting on behalf of a nonprofit organization. On the one hand, it’s a wonderful way to share all of the good work our PTAs do for our school communities and to help amplify the messaging of partner organizations. On the other, it’s also surprisingly easy to accidentally post the wrong thing, or share something that might turn out to be harmful down the line. Following CAPTA social media guidelines (link below) can help PTA leaders, by providing helpful best practices to follow when posting.

When trying to decide which accounts or organizations are OK to “signal boost” with a repost/share to stories on Instagram, use the CAPTA Green, Yellow, Red advocacy chart (pictured here, link below). This easy-to-follow chart can help you decide quickly whether you’re OK to automatically reshare, whether you should talk it over with your Board first, or whether you should move on without reposting to best protect your PTA and nonprofit status. A good rule of thumb? When in doubt, leave it out!

If you have any questions about posting from your PTA social media accounts, please feel free to reach out to communications@sdcouncilpta.org.
